OCR: Zond 2 EN ROUTE FOR MARS VIKING 1 AND 2 Launched from the Soviet base at Baikonur on November 18, 1964, Zond 2 utilized an upgraded Mars 1 technology. Unfortunately the electrical system had only half the power expected and contact with the probe was lost after a trajectory correction. Zond 2 continued on its solitary path, and undoubtedly passed within 5000 kilometers of the Red Planet. Mariner 4 Mariner 4 was launched from Cape Kennedy on November 28, 1964, only ten days after the Zond 2 launch. The probe Mariner 4 was put into solar orbit, then, after a trajectory correction, it flew over Mars on July 15, 1965, at a distance of 9846 kilometers. Mariner 4 took 31 close-ups which showed that the Martian surface was pocked with craters. In this respect, Mariner 4 was the first successful Mars mission. It also revealed that atmospheric pressure on the Red Planet was not even 1% of that at sea level on Earth. After flying past Mars, the probe went back into solar orbit. But contact was lost on December 10, 1967, probably because of a meteorite impact-even though the probe had been equipped with a detector for measuring micrometeorites. MARS BETAT
